The design makes the most of the small narrow footprint (as one would do in a submarine cabin, approx. 40m²) by hiding the utilitarian and service spaces in a black joinery box. A compact raised sleeping platform (bedroom) is hidden/ exposed behind a large yellow sliding screen, whilst a timber louvred screen allows light, privacy and views to be adjusted by the inhabitant. Circulation spaces double up as a galley kitchen, and frees up the remainder of the space to be arranged around lounging, living and people watching along the busy Mouille Point promenade in Cape Town.

The ship metaphor is appropriate for a living space so close to the ocean. Materials and colours were chosen to subtly remind the user of the nautical reference and inspiration.
