The Petal lamp is a hanging pendant made of bamboo. It is handmade, so each part of each light shade, and each light shade in its entirety, is different. This is to celebrate natural lines and forms and to keep a human touch. Along these lines, the instability of bamboo ply translates into an evolving and morphing product. When working with multi-veneer bamboo ply the design aspect is technical and intimately linked to the material, allowing for stressed shapes and tensioned structures. Bamboo is both light and strong. Also, the bamboo used is Panda-friendly – eco-sensitively and sustainably cultivated. Moreover, the bamboo ply that is used is a carbon sink: its quick growth and carbon absorption while alive offset the hydrocarbon and chemical emissions intrinsic to the manufacture of the plywood and the carbon footprint of shipping and further manufacturing or processing. The Petal lamp is a flat-pack light – easily transported and self-assembly is simple, quick, and satisfying. The finish used on the bamboo is a unique natural and petroleum-free product: a combination of beeswax, linseed oil and plant turpentine.
